My family and I (8 adults) are staying at Casa Rosa in Tankah Bay for a week in January. We are flying into the Cancun airport. What is the cheapest and easiest way to travel from the Cancun airport to our house? We don't need a vehicle during the week. Thanks.

Hi there are vans that can transport you or the cheapest would be the bus then cab out. A van ride round trip will run you around $300.00 for 8, which to me would be well worth it. My only question is are you sure that you don't need a vehicle for that week? How are you getting your groceries etc? I have a home in Tankah and we are a bit remote. I guess you can always walk up to the road and catch a convi or a cab and then take it back with your groceries. There are always plenty of cabbies hanging at San Francisco. At least Casa Rosa is nearer to the entranda than other properties (particularly ours). Just take some comfortable shoes! Very Happy

Just checked cancunvalet.com. Their round trip price for up to 11 people to Tulum is $190.00 US. (Sorry Ann...that $300 sounded a bit high to me, as friends have taken the cancunvalet van to Akumal for under $150 R/T.)

I do agree that you really do need a car for Tankah. Heck, we feel we need one for Akumal! Of course, we do get around a lot.

Travel Services of Akumal has even better prices:

But I agree, you're going to want a car to go to the ruins and any other excursions that appeal to you.

Hmmm.... You have all got me thinking that I need to get a rental car. I am have to going to rent something that can fit 8 adults + luggage. What's the cheapest/easiest place to get a rental? I probably need a full-size van or suburban. Thanks.

Actually, by the time you rent something that large, you're talking serioius money. I'd suggest getting a small car for grocery runs and smaller-group tours and get the majority of your group down via a service. There are a number of car rental choices. We like a local company called Avicar due to their great service and the fact that they're not located at the airport, so we don't have to pay the airport fee. We've rented from them the past two trips. Decent rates, all insurance included. Another local company getting some fairly good reviews recently is Easyway. Slightly better rates than Avicar. As for larger companies located at the airport, we like Executive. Budget has been pretty good also. Hertz is agonizingly slow. All of the companies I've mentioned have websites: www.avicar.com.mx www.easywayrentacar.com www.executive.com.mx www.budgetcancun.com Don't know Hertz's direct Mexican site, if there is one, as we will never use them again. You might also check expedia.com.

There is also Buster which is a local company which includes insurance and has a Tulum office as well as their Cancun office. I have not used them yet but Irene has used them about 4 times now and is sold on their service, prices and vehicles. Their site is www.busterrentacar.com .

You may want to check out the "car rental" posts from Joe in Maine. That should do a lot to knock at least one choice from your list! That's why I love this message boar - very handy! We're coming down to Soloman Bay Jan. 19th (and finally escaping this FEMA-torn land Very Happy )and Chad was just getting ready to check on rental cars. W've used both National and Avicar at least once (for much longer drive to Xcalak), and neither was a disappointment.

And yes, with 8 people, you may need to hit Tulum once or twice for groceries!
