This is a post from Portillas.com regarding a new airport somewhere between Puerto Adventuras & Tulum. Roughly translated by google:
The Mayan Riviera will have its airport

The Universal One

The President will announce. That destiny will surpass to Cancún; it will be taken care of the European market
Within the projects of the relaunching of the Mexican Caribbean announced by president Vicente Fox, it emphasizes the
announcement that will become in the next days of the construction of an airport in the Mayan Riviera, with which state
authorities and tourist industralists consider to increase in 50 percents the number of air operations in the tourist zone of
Quintana Roo.
The new terminal, that counts on the support of the federal government, via the Secretariat of Tourism, could be located
in some point of Port Adventures or Tulum, in lands equivalent to thousand hectares provided by the state government.
It is anticipated that he is ready for end of 2006 and that their cost is of between 120 million and 140 million dollars.
Gabriel Mendicuti, infrastructure undersecretary of Quintana Roo, assures that, in three years, the Mayan Riviera will
count on more quarters of hotel than the city of Cancún, reason why is necessary to anticipate itself to this growth.
Of 2 million 300 thousand tourists who annually visit this zone, equivalent to 36 percents of the tourists who arrive at Villa
I nibble, esteem that in five years, the Mayan Riviera will concentrate 50 percents of the state tourist supply, was indicated.
Gabriel Mendicuti remembered that the natural market that visits this tourist destiny of world-wide class is European.
According to his profile, he indicates, the visitor invests between eight and nine hours to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
"to be constructed this track, the tourists would not have to use two hours to visit the Mayan ruins of Tulum, but only 15
minutes", she maintained.
Interested groups There are two groups of investors interested in competing by the licitation of the new airport.
On the one hand it is Airports of the Southeastern (Asur), in charge of Brown Small Fernando, company that has nine
airports in different cities like Cancún, Cozumel, Huatulco, Tapachula and Veracruz.
Aeroplazas-Advent that also heads Pedro Rodriguez and Juan Carlos Towers has showed its interest to obtain the concession.
On the other hand, Auxiliary Airports and Services (HANDLE) inform that it maintains talks with the government of Quintana Roo, to make the corresponding feasibility studies, that they will include mechanical of grounds, flow of passengers and airspace.
Sectur supports the project
Rodolfo Elizondo Towers, secretary of Tourism, mentions in interview with the UNIVERSAL one, that this airport is a mature project, that begins to be necessary by the great amount of hotel developments that there are in the MayanRiviera.

I left off a second page in the original post, it follows:
"Every time more tourists arrive and we do not have why to bring them of an airport that is to 100 kilometers of distance,
but to lower them in that she is to 15 minutes of its hotel. This will do to the most attractive destiny and more efficient ", it
indicates the civil employee federal.
The new construction will help, even, not to depend on a single airport in cases of emergency, as it happened during the
disasters that the Wilma hurricane in Cancún caused, when problems had to evacuate the tourists, which will be easier if
it is counted on two terminals.
Rodolfo Elizondo discarded to the airport of Cozumel like a viable alternative to the congestionamiento of the aerial
terminal of Cancún, since it counts, said, with serious problems of marine transportation, that would not have the one of
the Mayan Riviera.

This has been announced before and will be again. I think James on PDC Info said it best(think of it as 'tongue-in-cheek):
in a related issue, the Mexican government has announced that it plans to make more announcements in the near to mid future. |

Interesting...this one is still floating around. Especially in light of the fact that ASUR has just broken ground for a new terminal at Cancun (Terminal 3) and either has started or is about to start work on a second runway which will double its flight movement capacity. I do like Judy's reference to James' post. It's probably the most accurate info on a new airport at Tulum that is available anywhere! |

We've been hearing airport rumor for several years, and more recently there have been meetings discussing the developement of a city of 250,000 just west of Akumal. Our experience on the Costa Maya has been that most of these rumors eventually come true. |
