Has anyone ever taken the bus to Tulum - I mean regular bus out of Cancun city? If so, how was it and what was the cost. Thinking of doing that then a cab from Tulum to the villa we have rented - Casa Tropical. I understand that you can rent cars in Tulum so would walk there and get one for a couple of days to do some sightseeing. Other than that just want to kick back, enjoy the sun for Christmas. Would appreciate any feedback - if we can get the right info this will be the only contentious part of our trip between my better half and myself. Rolling Eyes

Have no experience with the bus, but when you mentioned walking into Tulum to rent a car, I had to ask...do you really want to walk 12 to 15 km along a very hot and very busy highway to rent a car? Rent the car at the airport and forget the bus. You'd have to change busses at Playa anyway, from what I've heard. Surely, it's relatively inexpensive to take the busses...maybe about $15 to $20 US total per person one way, but you really don't want to be at Tankah without transportation.

I have to agree with everything Craig has said. We always rent a car in Cancun, we have stayed in Tankah, and would not want to be without a car. It would be a looooongggggg hot walk to Tulum, unless you could hitch a ride from someone. Have no experience with the busses. Enjoy the magic of the Riviera.

From the Cancun airport you would take the bus to the Cancun bus station. Cost is $15 pesos a person. From the Cancun bus station buy a ticket to Tulum. Cost is $63 pesos a person. The busses are comfortable. There is a car rental place 1 1/2 blocks north of the bus station in Tulum.

There is no need to walk into Tulum, if you don't want a car full time you can easily walk from Casa Tropical to the highway and catch a convi for 15 pesos ($1.50) that runs by every 15 minutes or less, and get to Tulum that way. You just stand by the road on the west side if you are going south to Tulum or east side if you are going north to Akumal, Xel-Ha etc. That is how all of the workers that live and work in Tankah do it. If you have been shopping and have a load of things that you are taking back to the house, you can easily get a cab. Casa Tropical is located near the entrance to Tankah so the walk would not be bad at all.

Mexico has excellent, inexpensive public transportation. When taking the bus, always try to get first class as it's faster. Second class buses will stop anywhere along the route and all those stops make for a really slow trip. First class buses only stop at the major terminals located in the big cities. Also, first class buses usually have bathrooms and second class don't.
